- The recentgeopolitical developments in Eastern Europe, especially theRussia-s invasion of Ukraine, have profoundly impacted theregion-s trade, infrastructure, and economic stability. These events haveforced Ukraine and Moldova to reconsider and reorient their trade routesand logistics channels, with increased emphasis on aligning with theEuropean Union (EU) to ensure secure and resilient trade flows. Additionally,both Ukraine and Moldova have accelerated their EU membership aspirations,prompting alignment with EU customs, regulatory standards, and infrastructurerequirements. Prior to theinvasion, Ukraine's export portfolio was predominantly comprised ofagricultural and industrial products, which formed the backbone of itsinternational trade. The conflict has necessitated a comprehensiverestructuring of export channels and modal choices, particularly given theconstraints on maritime routes. These rapid shifts highlight theimportance of strengthening logistics chains, particularly forcritical agricultural and industrial exports, to maintain marketaccess and economic stability - but also, especially in Ukraine-s case,for the imports needed for reconstruction. The Black Sea partial blockade,despite the success of the Ukraine corridor initiated inAugust 2023, has also underscored the need to strengthen the capacityof overland logistics routes, in the Solidarity Lanes perspective.Streamlining border procedures, especially at key crossing points with EUcountries, supports smoother, more efficient flows of goods. This Assignmentseeks to provide a clear understanding of the current logistics market and keyexport/import chains for Ukraine and Moldova, assessthe functioning of border crossing points used for trade in keycommodities, and identify practical options for streamlining supplychain procedures, facilitating trade, and attracting investment intothe logistics and transport sectors.
